A genuine private sale is not the same as a trader-to-consumer sale. Authority, title, description, misrepresentation and agreed terms can still matter. This guide concerns an ordinary lawful transaction between genuinely private parties. A dealer, trader, professional seller, estate, company or representative can face different mandatory duties even when a listing calls the sale private.

Focus on the vehicle, VIN, registration, mileage, keys, history and condition. Record only facts the parties actually checked and label a statement as seller-provided when it was not independently verified. Compare names and contact details with appropriate independent evidence. Match every registration number or plate, VIN, frame, chassis, hull, engine, serial, edition or certificate number to the physical item and the documents actually presented. Record whether each point was observed, stated by one party or supported by a record; do not replace an unknown answer with a convenient promise.

Resolve any difference between the seller, registered person, apparent owner, lender, estate, company or registry record before payment or possession changes hands. Add photographs of identifiers and visible condition with permission, but avoid unnecessary identity documents, unrelated people, account information and sensitive material. Preserve the original listing and important messages separately.

Review the applicable NCT, CVRT and independent inspection evidence. A certificate or earlier inspection records a point in time and is not a warranty of present safety or condition. A professional inspection, the parties’ observations and a seller statement have different evidential weight, so retain each result separately and describe known defects accurately.

Check current vehicle-history and finance evidence from an appropriate independent source. A clear search is useful evidence only for the identifiers and time searched; it is not a universal ownership guarantee. Retain the search reference and date, resolve an adverse result with the secured party or authority, and do not rely solely on a screenshot or seller statement.

Write the exact amount and currency, payment method, recipient, timing, deposit treatment, included items and any condition that must be satisfied before handover. Verify cleared funds in the recipient’s own account rather than relying on a transfer screenshot, pending alert or message. Signeret does not hold the purchase money, act as escrow or decide whether a payment is reversible.

Irish electronic-commerce law generally permits an electronic method for an ordinary private agreement, but a witness, prescribed form, original document, consent requirement or excluded transaction keeps its own rules. Read the final version together before signing. At handover, compare the item and identifiers again, count keys and accessories, record the date, time, place and usage reading, and give both parties the same durable PDF. Arrange lawful transport, insurance and safety checks before use.

Complete the current ownership notification, motor-tax, registration and any prescribed authority process separately. For a registered ship, use the statutory bill of sale and registry process. An authority form, receipt, witness, original signature, inspection certificate or register entry keeps its own legal effect and should be retained separately from the Signeret PDF. If instructions conflict or cannot be reconciled, stop and ask the responsible authority rather than inventing a shortcut.

Keep the final agreement, official confirmation, payment evidence, searches, inspection material, important messages and photographs for as long as they can reasonably matter. If fraud or misdescription is suspected, preserve the evidence promptly and contact the bank, platform, insurer, registry, police or civil dispute channel that can actually assist.
